Every journey to healing begins with HOPE
‘H’ stands for having a hunger for happiness and healing.
When we are satisfied with the status quo, we stay where we are. When we have a small desire to change, we still stay where we are. Healing can begin only when the desire to heal is strong enough to reach a tipping point. It’s when we want to change more than we want to stay the same. And you can tell that you’ve reached that tipping point when you’re willing to do the work to make that change. Happiness, healing, confidence, inner peace, and self improvement are all possible; but it begins with knowing what you want and having a strong desire (or hunger) to achieve it.
‘O’ stands for being open.
When I was struggling with depression and anxiety, everything about me was closed tight. I was like an armadillo rolled up in a ball trying to protect myself. I didn’t want anybody to know that I was struggling and I didn’t want anybody putting their nose into my business. I just wanted to be left alone. But healing didn’t begin until I opened up and admitted to someone else that I was not in a good place, and I had to be open to the idea of receiving help. I had to be open to learning new ways of thinking. I had to be open to trying new things. I had to be open to change. I had to be open to healing.
‘P’ stands for positive expectancy.
Positive expectancy means that you’re expecting a positive outcome. And this is one of the most important aspects of healing and recovering from any mental or emotional issue. In order to do the hard work of changing or healing, we have to believe that change is actually an option. The good news is that change really is an option. Healing is possible, and that’s exciting.
‘E’ stands for empowerment.
When we feel hopeless, anxious, full of despair, or have a victim mentality, we feel powerless. In order to heal, we need to get our power back. I’m not talking about a hierarchical type of power, where a person exerts power or force over another person. I’m talking about personal power. Power to overcome our challenges, power to find solutions to our own problems, power to be resilient, power to heal, power to let go, power to move forward, power to feel comfortable in our own skin. This kind of power brings confidence, happiness, strength, and inner peace. So how do we get this power? It comes through a combination of learning and doing. Education is a necessary step, but by itself it’s not enough, it’s through application that we begin to awaken the power that is already inside of us.
